Professor Brodhead completed her undergraduate and graduate work at Rutgers University, with an emphasis in graduate school on Irish and English writers of the late 19th and early 20th Century. She began teaching at North Central College in 1990. Her teaching interests include composition, literature, film, and Urban and Suburban Studies. She also accompanied a group of undergraduate students in 2006 for a four-month term to China and Japan to Beijing Foreign Studies University and Kyoto Gakuen University. She has been active in infusing Asian Studies into the undergraduate curriculum. Brodhead has taught more than 20 team-taught courses on subjects including Chicago and the Movies, Video Game Culture, and Cities and Cinema.
She is the Administrative Coordinator of Cultural Events, a role that includes chairing a committee of faculty, students, and staff to choose speakers and plan events that enhance the curriculum as well as appeal to the wider community. An agreement with Anderson's Bookshop has allowed the college to host authors including Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Caroline Kennedy, Rebecca Skloot, Bill Bryson, and Jon Meacham.
Brodhead has also served in a number of municipal positions, including chairing the City of Naperville Plan Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals. In 2013 she was elected to her second term as a Councilwoman for the City of Naperville. She is also a member of the Downtown Advisory Commission, the legislative committee of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference, the NCTV-17 Board, and the Naperville Development Partnership.
