Brian Redfern joins the theatre faculty at North Central College by way of Northern California where he was most recently Assistant Professor of Scenic Design at California State University, Chico. He has also taught at Southern Oregon University, San Diego State University, and Point Loma Nazarene University.
Professor Redfern teaches courses in theatrical design and technology and also serves as the production manager for North Central College's theatre department.
Professionally, Brian has designed the scenery for more than 100 theatrical productions for companies such as The Old Globe, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Harrah’s Casino Las Vegas, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Capital Stage, Sierra Rep, The Welk Resort Theatre, Summer Rep Theatre Festival, Cygnet Theatre Company and many others. Additionally, as an assistant Brian has worked for numerous award winning scenic designers including David Korins and Robert Brill, and Ralph Funicello. His assistant design credits span both nationally and internationally at venues including: American Conservatory Theatre, The La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Opera, South Coast Rep, The Huntington Theatre, The Guthrie, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and the Theatre Royal in Bath, UK.
In addition to theatrical work, Brian has designed a wide array projects ranging from residential interior remodels to tech startup office spaces to themed retail storefronts. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design from San Diego State University and a Master of Theatre Studies from Southern Oregon University. Professor Redfern has been honored with a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle award for outstanding scenic design as well as a University Resident Theatre Association award for excellence in undergraduate training. Brian is also a proud member of United Scenic Artists USA Local 829.
Outside of teaching and designing, Brian enjoys the outdoors, running and hiking with his wife, playing guitar, reading, museums, concerts, and exploring new cities. He is thrilled to be living in the Chicago area and working with the students at North Central.
