Backstage Pass: Inside the World of Theatre
Nov 05, 2024
The Department of Theatre extends an incredible variety of opportunities for students to get involved, from beginners interested in co-curricular work on shows, to advanced students dedicated to the study of theatre. This Spring 2025, Theatre is offering courses that fulfill general education credits or non-major courses of study, such as Fundamentals of Theatrical Design, Intro to Acting and Somatics, and Costuming Unleashed; or for advanced students and majors this Spring, Acting Realism and Acting for the Musical Stage. Our ambitious season features six full productions a year, plus a Dance production.
See below for titles and for audition, design team, and crew opportunities upcoming this Spring!
You don’t have to be a Theatre major to participate in theatre. There are numerous opportunities to be active with theatrical production. First years are as likely to be cast as seniors, and new designers, directors, dramaturgs, stage managers, and technicians can be assigned to a production, called Theatre Practicum. All students can also minor in Dance or participate in our dance productions.
Auditions for shows and Crew sign up for the Spring 2025 semester are held at the end of the Fall semester. Email Department Chairperson Dr. Lodewyck at lalodewyck@noctrl.edu to get signed up for the theatre activities listserv, or with any questions.
Upcoming this Spring:
The 39 Steps, directed by John Warrick; Assassins, directed by Landree Fleming and Music Directed by Ellie Kahn; and The Serpent Lady, directed for the Storefront Series by Kelly Ahr.
Interested in a major or double major? Students in Theatre can earn degrees in Theatre: Acting, Directing & Dramaturgy, Theatrical Design & Technology, or Musical Theatre, all which can also pair with other majors across the college. As a Theatre major, you can continuously hone your craft on production while taking traditional performance, design, and directing classes. You may study voice or dance technique in upper-level courses while taking classes in contemporary acting styles, the business of theatre, or acting on camera. Our senior industry showcase in downtown Chicago is one of the most longstanding and well-regarded showcases in the city, and our student Storefront Series offers students the unique opportunity to propose, create, and fully realize a production as part of the Department of Theatre mainstage season.
