Education Abroad: Financial Aid & Scholarships

With the exception of S.I.R.O.L. programs, in general, North Central College and federal financial aid and scholarships will be applied toward education abroad programs. Some federal financial aid may be used for S.I.R.O.L. programs. Please check with the Financial Aid Office at North Central College for more specific information.

Money and funding for your upcoming education abroad experience is always a crucial topic and this resource may help you find opportunities for scholarships, grants, assistantships, fellowships, and research opportunities. It is for all countries, majors, and a variety of programs. Most scholarship deadlines for fall education abroad programs are in April and May, and deadlines for spring education abroad programs are in January and February.

All Students

Alexandria and Gentri Taylor Study Abroad Scholarship: $1,500 for North Central College student studying abroad; 2.5 GPA; preference given to Hispanic and/or African American applicant.

Ashley's Foundation: $4,000; must have 3.0+ GPA, demonstrate financial need; must study abroad for a term or longer

Benjamin A. Gilman: Must be a US citizen; Pell Grant recipient.

Boren Scholarship:  U.S. citizen; Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation:  $1,000; undergraduate or graduate Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts; all majors and minors

Explore the World Travel Scholarships: Six $2,000 scholarships; Chicago area resident; 18-30 years old; U.S. citizen or permanent resident; demonstrate financial need 

Fund for Education Abroad:  U.S. citizen; variety of scholarships for:  all students, LGBTQI, athletes, those wanting to study in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, France, Germany and South America

Go Overseas Scholarship:  a current university student enrolled at a U.S. college or university.

Margaret E. Youel Memorial Scholarship:  two $2,500 scholarships; must be a full-time undergraduate student at North Central College and accepted into a North Central College study abroad program; scholarship is awarded based on financial need and designed to help support a student who otherwise might not be able to study abroad.

Rotary Foundation Cultural Scholarship:  Apply through local Rotary Club chapter.

ScholarTrips:  $2,500 (awarded to six individuals); 14 years and older; legal U.S. resident

Jack Shindler EDUCATION ABROAD Scholarship$1,000; Financial Need, Full-Time Student, Recipient must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative 2.75 Grade Point Average, Recipient must submit an essay of 500 words (minimum) outlining the reasons why they would like to study abroad.

Travel Video Scholarship: currently studying outside of your home country; 18 years or older

Tortuga Backpacks: $1,000; U.S. citizen or permanent resident or studying in the U.S. on a student visa; good academic standing; enrolled at 4-year degree-granting college/university; been accepted to a study abroad program

WSA Cultural Bridge Scholarship:  $500; student studying abroad in Europe; undergraduate student currently enrolled in studies with a minimum GPA of 3.0; U.S. citizen

France or Francophone Country

Walter Jenson Scholarship:  $2,000; pursuing a B.A. or B.S. in French Education; U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Germany

DAAD Scholarship:  Study abroad in Germany for 4-10 months; Junior or Senior standing; have well-defined study, research or internship plans for their stay in Germany

New Zealand

University of Waikato Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Study Abroad Fees Scholarship:  students enrolled at a Waikato partner institution who intend to enroll as a study abroad student in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

Go Overseas Study Abroad in New Zealand:  $15,000; see website for eligibility requirements

Southeast Asia

Bridging Scholarship for Japan Study:  U.S. Citizen or permanent resident enrolled as an undergraduate student; study in Japan for semester or year.

Freeman-ASIA:  2.8 GPA; U.S. citizen or permanent residence; demonstrate financial need

Morgan Stanley Japan Scholarship: Juniors and Seniors at US universities with an interest in economics, or international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan.

Turkey

Turkish Coalition of America Scholarship:  Grants awarded to minority students studying abroad in Turkey, Bosnia, or Herzegovina. 

United Kingdom and Ireland

BUTEX Scholarship for United Kingdom (UK) Programs: UK university must be a member of BUTEX (listed posted on website).

Chicago Scots Scholarship: A student at an accredited American college or university looking for a study abroad experience in Scotland.

Study in Britain & Ireland:  Eligibility varies depending on scholarship.

Other

Takis Chrysanthou Honored Scholar Award:  Must be accepted for a semester-long Global Learning Program in Cyprus; GPA 3.5.

The Critical Language Scholarship Program:  summer language studies for Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic language majors/minors; must continue language studies upon return from study abroad
