As an editor for Northwestern Medicine, English literature major Elizabeth Kulisek ’17 can be found reviewing a wide variety of content, from social media copy to patient education material. In her role, she analyzes and evaluates information, deciding which edits to make and ensuring each piece aligns with the leading healthcare system’s brand and style. In becoming a versatile editor and writer, she credits the knowledge and skills gained from her North Central College education, from her coursework to involvement on campus, including her work with the College’s humor magazine The Kindling.
What do you do in your role?
“I’m an editor at a large healthcare system in the Chicago area. My role is to help all sorts of professionals create writing that is clear and compelling. To do that, I review everything from Instagram posts to internal communications, checking for grammar, spelling and writing issues. Beyond those mechanics, I also hone the tone and style of material to make sure it aligns with our brand voice.”
What are you most enjoying about your job so far?
“I thoroughly enjoy the variety and the seemingly endless learning opportunities. It’s rewarding to work with people on materials that help them reach their goals, whether that’s raising awareness of a health issue or making corporate communications more effective. I also love fixing things, so it's satisfying to help shape something into a better version of itself.”
How did your time at North Central prepare you for this step in your career? Was there a specific faculty member or class that inspired you?
“Majoring in literature requires a lot of analytical thinking. You’re taking in new information, concepts and themes, and then putting them into context with many other things. Discussing your opinions of a book requires you to make judgments and back them up to make a compelling point. My courses at North Central College helped build my critical thinking and judgment skills.”
