Andrea Peguero GonzalezEver since she could hold a pencil, Andrea Peguero Gonzalez ‘25 knew she wanted to pursue a career in art. Starting in her first year at North Central College, there were many opportunities in store for her to do exactly that.

“I'm a strong believer that we should chase the things that make us really excited and motivated to keep going—art does that for me,” said Peguero Gonzalez, who is an honors student majoring in studio art and minoring in graphic design.

North Central’s studio art program has enabled Peguero Gonzalez to study a range of subjects and artistic styles, from art history to three-dimensional design and more.

“I love that the program emphasizes exploration and doesn't force you to pick a focus,” she said. “A good interdisciplinary artist has experience using all kinds of media and is able to learn fast in order to create new things that are exciting and can reach people.”

A faculty member encouraged Peguero Gonzalez to apply for a position as a student worker in the department of art and design. Now in her second year in the role, she has had the chance both to gain important experience and share her talents with colleagues.

“It’s an opportunity to give back to this creative space that I care a lot about,” Peguero Gonzalez said. “What's great about the role is that I've been able to learn a lot of things along the way.”

As part of the College Scholars Honors Program, Peguero Gonzalez also has enjoyed rigorous coursework outside her main areas of focus.

“I've been able to push my myself academically and personally at North Central,” she said. “A liberal arts education encourages learning beyond your major. I feel like I've really pushed myself in terms of what I can learn.”

Peguero Gonzalez is currently working on an illustrated book for her honors thesis and will be exhibiting her artwork Iin a solo exhibition in Oesterle Library Gallery in the spring. She will be one of the first people to graduate with a B.F.A. Degree in Studio Art from North Central this May.
