Helen “Herbie” Gamertsfelder Naumann

Class Year: 1946
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1999

Herbie Naumann’s major life “passion” has been in art—teaching figure drawing at North Central and exhibiting her figure compositions in solo, group and juried shows. She has also organized and managed art workshops. In 2002 Naumann hung her 16th solo exhibition of figure drawings at the Crossville Art Council in Crossville, Tenn. Over the years, her drawings have graced many North Central mailings and publications. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Naperville and was active in the Sunday school program. She is currently a member of the Fairfield Glade Art Guild. She and her husband, William Naumann, Ph.D, North Central professor of religious studies emeritus, created the Naumann-Gamersfelder Japanese Scholarship at North Central College.

 

H. William Rumsfeld

Class Year: 1949
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1999

Bill Rumsfeld entered North Central College in 1943, but his military service in World War II interrupted his education. He returned to the College and completed his bachelor’s degree in 1949. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin and completed a medical degree from the University of Texas SW Medical School and had a private practice until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Rumsfeld received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Texas in 1992 and again in 1993. He also published 21 articles in the field of biochemistry

 

Marilyn Kubly Freitag Workman

Class Year: 1954
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1999

Marilyn Workman worked all over the world as a school teacher with the armed services before returning to her native Wisconsin to teach in the public school system. Now retired from her profession, she remains busy as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and an adult day care where she drives the elderly to appointments and shopping. She has served on the College’s Alumni Board and established the Marilyn Kubly Freitag Scholarship Fund. Workman holds a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, is president of the Green County Retired Educators and a recipient of the Congressman Scott Klug Award for Outstanding Service in Education. She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators. Workman is retired from the Wisconsin Education Association and the National Education Association.

 

Paul Schmitt

Class Year: 1954
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1999

Paul Schmitt worked in the international marketing research division of A.C. Nielsen Company for 37 years before retiring as vice president. He has been head of the finance committee at First Presbyterian Church in Deerfield, Ill., where he served as an elder and deacon for 40 years. As a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Advertising Research Foundation and the American Marketing Association, he has been included in Who’s Who in the Midwest and was named Outstanding Boss by the Boone County, Kentucky Jaycees. He is also a supporter of the Special Olympics. His support of his alma mater includes contributions to the Lester C. Belding Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of his father-in-law. Schmitt served on the Alumni Board for five years and has been a guest speaker in the College’s business classes.

 

Jerry de St. Paer

Class Year: 1964
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1999

Jerry M. de St. Paer has been a member of the North Central College Board of Trustees since 1994 and served as co-chair of the College’s $50 million capital campaign, Preparing for a New Century, now successfully completed. He is senior executive vice president and chief financial officer of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, the principal insurance subsidiary of the Equitable Companies Incorporated. He is also Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Equitable Companies. He is a director of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Alliance Capital Management L.P., Equitable Real Estate Investment Management Inc., AXA Re Life Insurance Company, Peter Wodtke & Partners, National Mutual Holdings, and Nicos Seime Hoken K.K. de St. Paer is a member of the SAIS Advisory Council, the Financial Executives Institute, and the Conference Board’s Council of Financial Services CFOs.

 

Timothy Ogan

Class Year: 1994
Alumni Recognition Award Winner 1999

Timothy Ogan began working with the Naperville Police Department in 1995.  He is a field training officer, responsible for training new officers, as well as a certified bicycle officer. Ogan is a member of the Chicago Electronic Crimes Task Force and Professionals Against Confidence Crime. For the past six years, he has trained new and probationary officers. He has also worked with DuPage Family Shelter in assisting victims of domestic violence and assists apartment complexes to promote crime-free housing. Ogan has received three chief’s commendations, two in 2000 and one in 2004; a “Citizens Appreciate Police” award in 2001; and a City of Naperville team award in 2004.

 

Mona Bea Martin

Class Year: 1989
Alumni Recognition Award Winner 1999

Mona Bea Martin earned degrees in political science and French in 1989 and participated in the Illinois Legislative Staff Internship Program for one year after graduation.  She served as deputy director of policy, development, planning and research. Prior to that, Martin was the director of research and appropriations for the House Republican Staff, Illinois House of Representatives, until her recent promotion to director of policy development, planning and research for the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs.
