Joan Thompson Uebele

Class Year: 1961
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1991

Joan Uebele is a practitioner/teacher in the operating room and an instructor of nursing at Rush University in Chicago. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northwestern University and a master of science degree from the University of Illinois Medical Center. She is the past president of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses and a member of the American and Illinois Nurses Association. Uebele is the author of numerous professional articles and has frequently given presentations at workshops and seminars throughout the state.


Bertram M. Lee

Class Year: 1961
Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1991

Bertram Lee was a media and telecommunications entrepreneur. Lee and a business partner became the first African-American owners of a major league sports franchise when they were named co-owners and managing partners of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets in 1989. Lee served as president of both Albimar Communications and Kellee Communication, Inc. He was also on the board of directors of Reebok International, Inc., Boston Bank of Commerce and Shawmut Bank. During his lifetime, Lee received numerous awards, including the NAACP Imagine Award, The American Heritage and Freedom Award, and Howard University’s Salute to Blacks in Business.

 


Susan Kohn Eddins

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1991

Susan Kohn Eddins ’70 has remained very active in local, state and national professional organizations. Since receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award, she has served the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics, working on the scholarship committee. Eddins has also worked on the New Standards Project, the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), the Illinois Academic Standards writing team, the Chicago Academic Standards writing team, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards revision team for AYA Mathematics certification. She is in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (1992-present) and has received several excellence in teaching awards.

 


ArLynn Leiber Presser

Class Year: 1981
Alumni Recognition Award Winner 1991

ArLynn Leiber Presser is a novelist and freelance writer whose work ranges from the discussion of legal questions to women’s fiction. She received a  J.D. degree from Northwestern University in 1985, and worked as a litigator in Chicago for two years before embarking full-time on a career in writing.  She has twice co-edited “West’s Guide to American Law Supplement.” Her work has frequently appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Journal of the American Bar Association, and popular women’s magazines. In addition, three of her novels have been published.

 


David J. Rivait

Class Year: 1982
Alumni Recognition Award Winner 1991

David Rivait is an economist and senior budget analyst in the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy.  He received a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan in 1984 and received his first appointment in the civil service that year as a presidential management intern in the Office of the Secretary of the Treasury.  In 1989, he received a professional achievement award from the Executive Office of the President for his work on issues relating to drug law enforcement.
