Message from the President and Provost

Jun 01, 2020

Dear North Central College Community,

In recent weeks, the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, as well as other racist incidents in the local community, have once again reminded us of the continuing pernicious effects of racism, hatred and inequality in our society. These incidents are causing harm and pain to many members of our own campus community and remind us that as a nation and an institution we still have so much work to do. Over the last several years, with the help of our Black Student Association, other student leaders, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force, and faculty and staff colleagues, we have made significant investments in diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work has never been more important and, despite the realities of COVID-19, we remain committed to these efforts on campus and encourage you to do the same. While we are physically distant, we remain together as a campus community and we are steadfast in our commitment to building a better North Central College for all.

This is a time for each of us to listen and learn from the experiences of our Black colleagues, neighbors, friends, teammates, and classmates, adjust our own understanding of the world and to take actions accordingly. In the days that lie ahead, a number of campus groups will be planning additional activities to provide our campus community with opportunities, albeit remotely, to come together in support of each other and to continue our own equity work as a College.

We are also well aware of the ongoing protests throughout the country, including in Naperville. As a College, we recognize and support the right of everyone in our campus community to exercise their right to freely express themselves, and we encourage everyone to do so safely.

If you are in need of additional support, we encourage you to use any of the many resources listed below.

We wish you good health and safety in the midst of all of the present challenges.
