Maria E. Gommel grew up on a farm in Northern Illinois. She is a proud alum of North Central College, graduating in 2013 with majors in mathematics and actuarial science. Over the past five years, Maria has been working on her Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Iowa, where she uses topological features of fMRI brain scan data to study Huntington's disease. At Iowa, Maria developed a love for teaching while working as a teaching assistant for a wide variety of math courses. She also was involved in Iowa's Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day, an annual day-long event intended to foster young women’s interest in math and science. Outside of mathematics, Maria is a huge Chicago Cubs fan and enjoys listening to the Beatles.
