Stephen Maynard Caliendo wins grant for study

Print Email Share
Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, and Charlton McIlwain of New York University were awarded a grant of approximately $21,000 from Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS) and funded by National Science Foundation for their project, “The Effects of Racial and Racist Appeals on White Voters.” Their study is designed to ascertain how anti-black racial appeals and black candidate appeals to racial authenticity affect white potential voters’ perception of both black and white candidates. Results from the study are part of Caliendo’s and McIlwain’s forthcoming 2010 book titled Race appeal: The prevalence, purposes, and political implications of racial discourse in U.S. electoral politics.
