Television broadcast students are getting a taste of reality this term in the new Advanced Video (SPC 417) class with live TV. Every Thursday for the second half of the term, students have tested their skills and managed their nerves as they present “NCC Weekly” live and on-air at 3 p.m. on Naperville Community Television (NCTV), Channel 17.
The first episode featured Marc Dahlquist ’11 as host with a timely topic “Concussions in Sports,” produced by Geoffrey Clark ’11. The second week featured a roundtable discussion hosted by Drew Borczak ’11 and directed by Brianna Tolliver ’12. The third episode during week eight was a one-on-one interview featuring North Central students Stew Charles ’12 and Kate Oscarson ’12, hosted by Alli Wilson ’11 and directed by Ryan Piers ’11.
Future shows will take a look at Cardinal sports with a fall recap Thursday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. with Tolliver, produced by Wilson and Lucas Mitzel ’11. The final show for the term is a “Basketball Preview” with Justin Zipser ’11 in the host position and Jon Powell ’11 as director on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. on NCTV.
“My goal is to give students a real-world experience and nothing does that better than going live on a regular basis,” says course instructor and senior lecturer in broadcast communication Elizabeth Spencer, who is also executive director of NCTV.
Advance Video is the capstone course for the broadcasting track for students interested in television production. This is the first time the course has been offered with a studio component. All episodes will be rebroadcast on the College’s television channel starting in D Term.
Students taking the Advanced Video course are majoring in broadcast communication, marketing, sport management, finance and economics.
