Entrepreneur and philanthropist M. Al and his wife Lila Self of Hinsdale, IL, have donated $1.5 million toward the Science Center.
“It’s Al’s intention that this contribution will spark and create a momentum for funding the Science Center at North Central,” said Roger Hruby Sr. ’58, Life Trustee.
Self previously owned Bee Chemical Co. in Lansing, IL, an international producer of automotive coatings. He hired Hruby after Hruby finished his North Central degree in chemistry. “Al offered me $460 a month and I thought I was rich,” Hruby recalled. “He’s been a mentor and friend for 50 years.”
Self sold his company in 1985 and over the years, directed his wealth toward education. An alumnus of the University of Kansas, Self funds graduate fellowships there in a variety of disciplines for students with career and leadership potential.
