Sanderson scores big with Blackhawks internship

Derek Sanderson ’13 landed an internship with the Chicago Blackhawks through the INROADS program, an organization that helps prepare minority students for corporate and community leadership through internship experiences. The program was originally launched in Chicago in 1970, but now INROADS is an international organization with more than 35 offices serving nearly 2,000 interns at more than 200 companies. INROADS is a prestigious program available at institutions like Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. It gives North Central students a head start on their career goals.

Sanderson, a sport management major, spent his summer working as an intern with the Chicago Blackhawks marketing department. His daily tasks included data entry, storing files and working on projects for the annual Blackhawks Convention and training camp. “The experience has been unbelievable,” says Sanderson. “I’ve met Patrick Kane, Corey Crawford, Brent Seabrook, John Scott and Viktor Stalberg, along with some alumni and the coaching staff. Working on daily tasks that are assigned by multiple people, having deadlines and being given a project where you use your own creative ideas have all been learning experiences.”

Sanderson was featured in the Blackhawks email newsletter and told subscribers: “I realized that I wanted to work in sports in the eighth grade. I love the atmosphere that working in sports provides. My dad always says ‘find a job that you love and you will never work a day in your life,’ and that is how I feel about working in sports.”

North Central alumni who were INROADS interns include Sunny Gill ’10, who gained experience at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and Carolina Hirsch ’11, who interned four summers with General Electric.
