Mary Lou Puttkowa Lipscomb is a science curriculum and professional development specialist for IMSA FUSION, an outreach program of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. She writes curriculum and provides professional development to teachers who are part of this after-school math and science program for talented, motivated middle-school students. Since she began with the program in 2000, FUSION has grown from seven to 95 schools and now includes curriculum materials and professional development for teachers and students in fourth and fifth grades. In 2010 IMSA FUSION was selected as one of the Best Practice K12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education programs in the nation by the Bayer Corporation’s Making Science Make Sense initiative for its “proven track record of helping girls and underrepresented minorities to participate and achieve in STEM.” Feedback from students and parents has been positive, she says, and outside research has confirmed improvements to teacher skills and students’ academic performance.
