Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, and four current and former students—Donglun Liu ’14, Steven Mackey ’13, Tyler Schroeder ’13 and Kyle Thomas ’13—were coauthors of a paper titled “Average Bridge Number of Shadow Resolutions” that was published in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications, October 2013.

The research, performed while the students were in residence at North Central College, is an exploration of virtual knot diagrams resulting from resolving knot pseudodiagrams.

Mackey, who majored in applied mathematics, is pursuing a graduate program at the University of Missouri. Schroeder majored in mathematics and is in a graduate program at the University of Iowa. Thomas majored in computer science and entered the workforce. Liu, a senior, is majoring in mathematics.

Nicholson has been teaching at North Central College since 2010. He earned a B.A. from Lake Forest College and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
