Neil R. Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, recently had an article published in the Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications. His article, titled “Piecewise-Linear Virtual Knots,” both investigates how various classical knot theory results carry over to the space of virtual knots and classifies piecewise-linear virtual knots up to edge index six.
The Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications is intended as a forum for new developments in knot theory, particularly developments that create connections between knot theory and other aspects of mathematics and natural science. Its stance is interdisciplinary. Papers that are published include new research in the theory of knots and links and their applications, new research in related fields, and tutorial and review papers.
Nicholson has been a member of North Central’s faculty since 2010. He earned a B.A. from Lake Forest College and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa.
