Hamalis participates in World Council of Churches assembly in Republic of Korea

Perry Hamalis—North Central College Cecelia Schneller Mueller Professor of Religion, associate professor of religious studies and director of the College Honors Program—served as a delegate of the Eastern Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate for the 10th General Assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC). He also served as a facilitator and panelist during the meetings.

The General Assembly, the 10th in the 65-year history of the WCC, took place in Busan, Republic of Korea, Oct. 30-Nov. 8, and was attended by more than 4,000 dignitaries, delegates and staff members of the 350-member churches worldwide.  

In addition to serving as a delegate for the Eastern Orthodox Church’s Ecumenical Patriarchate, Hamalis cofacilitated one of the “Ecumenical Conversations” on the topic, “Moral Discernment for Life, Justice, and Peace.” The conversations were designed to promote in-depth discussion on issues of common concern. He also was a panelist for the workshop titled “Orthodox Theology of Mission and the Global Demand for Justice and Peace.”

Hamalis joined North Central’s faculty in 2004. He earned his B.A. from Boston College, his M.Div. from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
