Hamalis among top Eastern Orthodox scholars to contribute to anthology

Perry Hamalis, North Central College Cecelia Schneller Mueller Professor of Religion, associate professor of religious studies and director of academic opportunities, has a published essay, titled “The Theological-Ethical Contributions of Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov) to Environmental Issues,” in the 2013 book “Toward an Ecology of Transfiguration: Orthodox Christian Perspectives on Environment, Nature, and Creation.”

Edited by John Chryssavgis and Bruce Foltz and published by Fordham University Press, the book makes the case that Orthodox Christianity offers unique spiritual resources especially suited to the environmental concerns of today. It includes a collection of essays written by top Eastern Orthodox scholars from around the world with a prefatory letter by His All Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Hamalis joined North Central’s faculty in 2004. He earned his B.A. from Boston College, his M.Div. from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
