North Central College’s education department will facilitate a brown bag lunch discussion on Feb. 19 about moral courage as it relates to the area of education.

The discussion will take place at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the second floor Gramarosso Gallery at the Res/Rec Center. All students are invited, especially those interested in education.

Nancy Keiser, professor of education and coordinator of teacher education, and Julie Carballo, adjunct assistant professor of education and part-time director of the Teach First program, will lead the session. They will address ethical dilemmas and moral courage in the field of education and encourage students to consider when, as future educators, they might need moral courage in their careers.

Throughout the academic year, North Central College’s Leadership, Ethics and Values (LEV) program has been exploring the topic of moral courage with events that include a visit by a prominent author in May, multimedia presentations and discussions like the education session.

About the focus on moral courage, Schneller Sisters Professor of Leadership, Ethics and Values Tom Cavenagh says, “When we talk about various motivations for what we do, we don’t talk enough about moral courage. This focus allows us to examine the merging of leadership, ethics and values and how they can effect social change and impact real people.”
