Legendary head men’s cross country coach Al Carius delivered North Central College’s 2013 Last Lecture, which can be viewed online and is titled “Groundhog Day.” Hosted by the College Union Activities Board (CUAB), the College’s sixth annual Last Lecture was presented May 13 in Wentz Concert Hall.

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin are chosen for internship in Nashville that empowers women to promote social justice.

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin were accepted to a 10-month internship at Belle H. Bennett House, an intentional community for the empowerment of young women at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN.

The program, beginning in August, consists of 40-hour work weeks that focus on female empowerment and the eradication of racism through volunteer work, community living and internships at various organizations in the area.

In what has become an annual tradition during Cornerstone Week, North Central hosted its second Science Alumni Event May 16. This year’s program featured guest speaker Michael Chapman, Ph.D., professor in the school of physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, and alumni Blake Young ’04 and Allison Beckham ’09.

More than 850 guests attended the Inaugural Ball for North Central College President Troy D. Hammond May 17 in the Residence Hall/Recreation Center.

The event featured dinner and dancing and capped a day highlighted by President Hammond’s Inauguration Ceremony. The day also featured the Cornerstone Celebration Picnic and the President’s Roundtable on STEM education and the liberal arts.

Dr. Troy D. Hammond was inaugurated as the 10th president of North Central College.

On Friday, May 17—the same date as the laying of the Cornerstone for Old Main in 1870—Dr. Troy D. Hammond was inaugurated as the 10th president of North Central College. The ceremony was held in Pfeiffer Hall and was attended by Hammond’s family and friends, the campus community, delegates from other institutions of higher education and alumni representatives ranging from the Classes of 1948 through 2012.

College and the community celebrate Cornerstone Day with picnic

North Central College celebrated its annual Cornerstone Day picnic in grand style at the completed Riverwalk Gateway with cuisine from local restaurants.

Cornerstone Day has long been a celebratory day around North Central College. An annual celebration, it commemorates the College’s move to Naperville from Plainfield and the laying of the cornerstone for Old Main on May 17, 1870. This year’s Cornerstone Celebration Picnic just happened to fall on the same date—May 17—and the College invited the whole community to the party.

On May 14, North Central College held its annual Honors Convocation, which publicly recognizes student excellence in the academic and cocurricular life of North Central. Students who performed outstanding work in their academic program were honored, as well as student-athletes and students who demonstrated exemplary leadership and service.

David Fuentes, Ph.D., delivered the keynote address for North Central College’s 16th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.

Every culture in human history has created music and experienced its power to shape thoughts and feelings, David Fuentes, Ph.D., said in his keynote address for North Central College’s 16th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.

Fuentes, professor of composition and theory at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., spoke about music’s inherent connection to the human experience in his address, “Do You Hear What I Hear? Listening as Research,” May 14 in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall.
