At its February meeting the North Central College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to purchase a house adjacent to campus at 409 E. Chicago Ave.

At its February meeting the North Central College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to purchase a house adjacent to campus at 409 E. Chicago Ave. The house will replace the Edward Everett Rall House as home to the College’s president.

In February 2012 the Board began evaluating the Rall House, which served the recent five presidents of the College: Edward Everett Rall, after whom the house is named; C. Harve Geiger; Arlo L. Schilling; Gael D. Swing and Harold R. Wilde.

Brittany Graham, North Central College sustainability coordinator, was a featured speaker at a statewide composting conference held Feb. 7 at the Westin Hotel in Lombard. She talked about North Central’s composting project at Kaufman Dining Hall as a successful model of waste reduction strategies.

North Central College students help New Orleans host the Super Bowl

Sport Management Association members gain experience and build memories volunteering at the Super Bowl.

While the Super Bowl may already be a distant memory for many, 15 members of North Central’s Sport Management Association (SMA) are still pinching themselves as they recall rubbing elbows with sports celebrities and gaining admission to the country’s most popular sporting event, held this year in New Orleans.

“I had goosebumps the entire time I was in the Superdome,” says Matt Meindl  ’14, a management and sport management double major. “And experiencing New Orleans’ culture was also a thrill of a lifetime.”

What an honor to write this column as the 10th president of North Central College!

My family and I have had a great time getting to know the College over the last few months. I’ve learned very quickly that this is one busy campus—even in the middle of a Chicago winter. From the alumni track & field meet, basketball games and the International Festival, to the Martin Luther King prayer breakfast and Chicago Sinfonietta performance, we’ve enjoyed experiencing the diverse and enriching opportunities this campus offers.

North Central scholars experience calendar celebration in Guatemala, not doomsday

As the media warned of impending doom on December 21, 2012—supposedly the end of the world as predicted by Maya calendars—scholars of Maya culture like Matthew Krystal, associate professor of anthropology, knew that the doomsday hype was a hoax. So did Haley Kirk ’13, who has a double major in Spanish and global studies. She had extended a North Central College research trip in Guatemala to attend a special ritual on December 21. The atmosphere that day among the Maya people was one of hope and celebration, not apocalypse, she says.

Two North Central College students have developed a mobile app for friends to share pictures of food they like.

Entrepreneurs Jeremy Markham ’15 and Kyler Juckins ’15 are the creators of DinnDinn, a smart phone app for food lovers. DinnDinn works like a virtual refrigerator. Users upload photos of food, drinks and other items to their page and rate them. Their friends and followers, known as “taste buds,” can comment on the posts.

The North Central College men’s track and field team claimed the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championship for the 13th consecutive year Feb. 23. The fourth-ranked Cardinals won six of the 17 events and totaled 250 points, while 11th-ranked Augustana College was a distant second. North Central has won the CCIW indoor championship every year since its inception in 2001.

The program aims to familiarize public audiences in the United States with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.
