Dr. Karl Brooks ’90 will be keynote speaker Monday, Jan. 21, at North Central College’s annual MLK Week Prayer Breakfast.

North Central College hosts its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week Prayer Breakfast from 7 to 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the Fireside Lounge and Banquet Hall on the second floor of the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave.

Dr. Karl Brooks ’90, former North Central College associate dean of students and current dean of student success at Joliet Junior College, will be the keynote speaker.

North Central College’s 13th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference Feb. 22-23 will help aspiring artists learn to become successful entrepreneurs.

The SEA Conference provides educational resources to help aspiring artists gain entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain careers as independent artists. The conference features performances, workshops, panel discussions and other activities tailored to actors, filmmakers, musicians, painters, sculptors, writers and other artists.

Marisa Fontana, North Central College adjunct assistant professor of sociology, was invited to present her original research as an archaeologist at the Southeastern Archaeology Conference held Nov. 7-10 in Baton Rouge, La. Fontana’s talk was a preliminary report on the feasibility of using technology—called Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry or LA-ICP-MS, for short—to identify chemically distinct groupings of Native American pottery recovered from archaeological sites in Alabama.

Dr. Troy D. Hammond officially began his duties on Tuesday, January 1, as the 10th president of North Central College. He was formerly the president of the energy services business at BlueStar Energy in Chicago. Hammond and his wife Sharlene have lived in Naperville with their four children since 2010.
