New Athletic Hall of Fame inductees excelled in track and field and football

The sports information office has published profiles about the final two of six inductees to North Central College’s Athletic Hall of Fame: Dan Siewert ’82, the most versatile throwing-event athlete in the men’s track and field program, and Luther Selbo ’68, who ushered in a period of success in the Cardinals’ football passing game that was unrivaled for nearly 40 years.

Tammy S. Wynard, North Central College visiting instructor of health and physical education and coordinator of health education, presented twice at the annual American School Health Association conference in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 10-13. The conference brought together professionals working in higher education, K-12 schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as pre-service teachers and school nurses.

North Central College will honor the nation’s top high school broadcasters Nov. 10 when it hosts the 10th annual John Drury High School Radio Awards.

Chicago ABC7 News anchor/reporter Ben Bradley will join John Madormo, general manager of North Central College’s acclaimed student-run radio station WONC-FM 89.1, to present the honors.

The by-invitation ceremony begins at noon Saturday, Nov. 10, in North Central College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St.

Dorothy Pleas, North Central College director of multicultural affairs, and Nicole Rivera, visiting assistant professor of psychology, presented a session titled, “Strengthening the First-Year Experience Through a Summer Bridge Program for At-Risk Students,” at the Midwest First-Year Conference at Northern Illinois University on Sept. 28.

North Central College is honoring Priscilla Gallagher of Chicago with a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Gallagher and five others will be honored during the College’s Homecoming Convocation at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville.

North Central College student Maria Gommel honored as 2012 Lincoln Laureate

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois is honoring North Central College Goldwater Scholar Maria Gommel as a 2012 Lincoln Laureate.

Maria Gommel has been named North Central College’s 2012 Lincoln Laureate.

Gommel is a senior from Malta, Ill., who is double-majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and minoring in economics. She intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

She is a participant in North Central’s College Scholars Honors Program for high-achieving undergraduates. She spent a year working with two other students and mathematics professor Linda Gao on mathematical modeling research in epidemiology.

The celebration will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Residence Hall/Recreation Center and includes dinner, dancing, entertainment and more.

North Central College is honoring Eric McLaren, Ph.D., of Sugar Grove with a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award.
