Nov. 7, 2011—Chicago ABC 7 News anchor/reporter John Garcia will join John Madormo, general manager of North Central College’s nationally acclaimed WONC-FM 89.1, on Nov. 19 to honor the best of high school radio broadcasters for 2011.

Garcia will address nominees and announce winners for the ninth annual John Drury High School Radio Awards at a ceremony beginning at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The event is hosted by North Central College and WONC radio.

From ham radio, to carrier current and AM, to WONC-FM 89.1 and the Internet, the radio voice of North Central College has been broadcasting for 64 years.

After World War II, incoming students to North Central College included a number of returning war veterans, many of whom had experience as service radio technicians during the war. As a result of the hard work and efforts of eight student technicians, the campus radio club was born, using ham radio.

North Central College broadcasting alum Ray Odom returns to rock radio on WRXQ

Ray Odom, a 1997 graduate of North Central College, has joined WRXQ-FM 100.7 as host of an evening show on the Coal City-based rock station.

Oct. 12, 2011—Ray Odom, a 1997 graduate of North Central College, has joined WRXQ-FM 100.7 as host of an evening show on the Coal City-based rock station.

Odom, better known as “Crazy Ray,” was featured on Chicagoland Radio and Media, which recounted Odom’s previous tenure as overnight host on “The Loop,” WLUP-FM 97.9.

Seven North Central College student broadcasters have been nominated for 2011 Student Silver Dome Awards in three categories.

Aug. 18, 2011—Seven North Central College student broadcasters have been nominated for 2011 Student Silver Dome Awards in three categories.

The Student Silver Dome Awards are presented each fall by the Illinois Broadcasters Association to the top college and university radio and TV programs in the state.

WONC competes among commercial stations for Silver Dome Awards

North Central’s WONC-FM received two nominations, two second-place wins for 2011 Silver Dome Awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association.

June 28, 2011—North Central College’s radio station WONC-FM 89.1 received two nominations for Silver Dome Awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA). The Silver Domes are the most prestigious broadcast performance award in the state.

Over-the-air broadcast stations and on-air talent in small, medium and Chicago market commercial radio, as well as medium and Chicago market television, were included in the competition.

Tune in to the College’s student-run station WONC-FM 89.1 at 10 p.m. Friday, May 20, to hear a live studio interview and possible acoustic set with Jim Peterik, Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and guitar/keyboardist with the band The Ides of March, which performs in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in Pfeiffer Hall. Peterik is a founding member of Survivor and The Ides of March, a Chicago band which burst on the national scene in 1970 with the million-selling single “Vehicle.”



WONC wins two first-place awards at national competition

WONC-FM 89.1, North Central’s student-run radio station, won two first-place awards in national competition for Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Documentary.

April 29, 2011—WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run radio station, brought home two first-place awards in national competition from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).  

The first-place Golden Microphone Trophy Awards were in two categories: Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Documentary.
