May 16, 2012—Kelly Cox of Plainfield was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in East Asian Studies Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Cox is a senior majoring in East Asian studies with a focus in Japanese at North Central College. She is the daughter of Tracy and Terri Cox and a graduate of Plainfield South High School.

Brian Hoffert, North Central College associate professor of religious studies and history and coordinator of East Asian studies, participated as presenter and moderator at the 8th Annual Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., April 13-15. North Central College hosted the conference in 2011.

Students and faculty collaborate to identify ancient remains

North Central College students have been chipping away at archaeological remains from an ancient fortress in Jordan, in cooperation with the Field Museum.

During fall term, nine students have been chipping away at archaeological remains as part of their course work in Archaeology in Jordan SOA 390, a new class based on original research conducted by Edward Maher, lecturer in anthropology and the classics.

Senior attends student-led conference in Korea

Soch Mel ’11, with dual East Asian majors at North Central, is selected to American delegation at the Korea-America Student Conference in Korea July 7-31.

Aug. 25, 2011—Sochantra (Soch) Mel, a 2011 graduate, capped off his studies at North Central College by joining the American delegation at the Korea-America Student Conference (KASC) in South Korea July 7-31.

College hosts Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought this weekend

The College’s East Asian studies program will host the seventh annual Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought, May 6-7. The free, two-day conference seeks to foster dialogue and interaction among scholars and students and will feature Michael Puett, professor of Chinese history at Harvard University, in a keynote address at 4:30 Saturday, May 7. The title of his talk is “Ancestors, Fathers and Sons: Ritual Theory and Philosophy in Early China.”
