Honors Day 2016 celebrates student excellence

North Central College recognizes high-achieving students for academic and co-curricular excellence throughout their college careers on Honors Day.

Honors Day is an annual highlight at North Central College. The day publicly celebrates students and their excellence in the academic and cocurricular life of the College. Honors Day 2016 opened on May 17 with a keynote address by Dr. Julio J. Ramirez as part of North Central’s 19th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.

Senior Art Show “FOUNDations” showcases diverse body of student work

Two gallery locations will feature artwork by 11 North Central College art students in the annual Senior Art Show through June 11.

An array of artwork by 11 North Central College art students will be showcased in the 2016 Senior Art Show through June 11. Titled “FOUNDations,” the show features paintings, drawings, ceramics, digital work and more.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit will be on display in two gallery locations: the College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery and Oesterle Library Gallery. Visitors are invited to browse the exhibit, enjoy refreshments and greet the artists during a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in both galleries.

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at North Central College and Fox Valley SCORE will present the second annual Ideas to Profits Business Conference on May 21. It will include the Business Pitch Contest with a $5,000 grand prize and entry into a business accelerator.

North Central launches its own startup: new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE)

North Central College’s new CIE serves as a bridge between the College and the regional business community, helping launch startups, mentor entrepreneurs.

The College’s new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) isn’t just another business center.

“We’re dedicated to fostering a culture of innovation in every field, not just traditional business disciplines,” explains Martha Carney, the Center’s executive director. “We’re going to be integrated into every discipline—sports, arts, STEM, history, business, everything.”

North Central College’s Science Center reached new heights during its construction when the campus community celebrated the hoisting and placement of a ceremonial final steel beam during a Topping-Out Celebration March 14.

Traditional among ironworkers, the ceremony is sometimes called Capping Off, or Topping Off, or Topping Out. Regardless, said President Troy D. Hammond during his remarks, “It’s a significant construction milestone that we’ve reached only because of the dedication and hard work of many, many people.”

Enactus student organization sponsors event at annual SEA Conference

North Central’s Enactus hosts financial experts to speak to artists about finding the finances to start a creative business and take it to the next level.

North Central College’s Enactus student organization has been awarded a $2,100 Sam’s Club Step-up for Small Business Grant that focuses on two primary goals: mentoring a small business and educating underserved borrowers. At the end of summer 2015, Enactus students took part in competing for this yearlong grant project opportunity.
