Music Scholarships & Audition Information

Performance scholarships for Concert Choir, Women's Chorale, Cardinal Chorus, Concert Winds, Jazz Studies and Composition are available to all students, regardless of major. Performance scholarships require you to perform in an approved ensemble each term and take applied lessons on your main instrument/voice; piano scholarships require you to accompany juries, recitals, and/or ensembles (the exact assignment is determined yearly by the piano faculty).

Exemplary attendance and musicianship, and grades of "B" or higher are expected in both ensemble and private lessons in order to maintain the scholarship.

Audition Days:
Audition Days are half day events which include:

  • your warm-up and audition time(s)
  • a group Q & A meeting with Music faculty
  • a luncheon and "Showcase" featuring student and faculty performances
  • optional campus and downtown Naperville tours

Audition Days are designed to give you a comprehensive picture of the deparment, faculty, and programs as well as the opportunity to audition for scholarships in one or more areas. Students are expected to attend all elements of the Audition Day and prospective music majors must indicate their intent in advance with your Admission counselor and on the information sheet you will receive when you arrive that day. Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend all portions of the Audition Day (except for the audition itself) with your student!

Choral Scholarships

To audition for a choral scholarship, you will need

  • two memorized art songs (no "pop" songs will be accepted). One must be in English, the other in a foreign language. An accompanist will be provided or you may bring your own. No accompaniment tapes accepted.
  • to sight-read a short excerpt.
  • two letters of recommendation from music professionals who know you and your musical background (your choral director, private voice teacher, church choir director, etc.)

Instrumental Scholarships (wind/percussion; string; piano; athletic bands)

To audition for an instrumental scholarship, you will need

  • one prepared solo which shows your overall technical and expressive ability.
  • to demonstrate your sight-reading skills and knowledge of all major/minor scales.
  • two letters of recommendation from music professionals who know you and your musical background (your band director, private instrument teacher, etc.)

The athletic band audition will consist of a brief interview and one prepared solo

Jazz Scholarships

To audition for a jazz scholarship, you will need

  • to demonstrate your basic skills in the following areas
    1. technique (scales, arpeggios, etc.)
    2. improvisation (blues, rhythm changes, etc.)
    3. sight-reading 
  • two letters of recommendation from music professionals who know you and your musical background (your band director, private instrument teacher, etc.)

Jazz pianists and guitarists should demonstrate the ability to comp over blues and/or rhythm changes; bass players should demonstrate the ability to construct bass lines over the same. Drummers should demonstrate a basic command of styles (medium swing, even eighth, ballad, Latin, etc.)

Music Education Scholarships

Music Education Scholarships at North Central College are awarded to Music Education majors who exhibit the potential to be leaders in the music education profession. Scholarship recipients are expected to do the following.

  • Declare Music Education as one's major and retain active status in the major by registering for the required courses in a timely manner.
  • Earn a grade of "C" or higher for all music and education courses, including private study and ensemble*; maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or better.
  • Join NAfME (the National Association for Music Education) and participate regularly in our NAfME student chapter meetings and activities, including the annual IMEA All-State Conference each January in Peoria [required]. NAfME membership fees (approx. $32.00/year) and most of the conference costs (approx $100.00) are the responsibility of the individual student and are due at the beginning of fall term.
  • Exhibit the leadership, ethics, and values expected of those in the teaching profession.

*If you are also on a performance scholarship, you must earn a "B" or higher in that ensemble and the private lessons associated with that performance scholarship.

To compete for a music education scholarship, you will be interviewed briefly as part of your audition on your primary instrument.
