Shaun had planned to become a math teacher but “wanted to know what’s out there. When I learned about actuarial science, I liked what I saw.”
A Career Development counselor helped Shaun learn more about actuarial careers and set him up to shadow a North Central alumnus who works as an actuary with Allstate. Shaun also received advising from a mathematics professor who walked him through the duties of an actuary and developed a plan toward graduation.
“I realized, ‘wow, I can do this’ and my professor did all this work for me.”
Shaun spent his summer as an actuarial intern with a health insurance company and later took his first actuarial exam.
“Going to a small school has big advantages. The relationships you build with faculty offer more than you can imagine.”
