WONC staffers named finalist in national and state competitions

Several WONC-FM 89.1 staff members were named national finalists in three categories by the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) National Student Production Awards, an annual competition for college and university radio stations. Winners will be announced Oct. 31 at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas. North Central finalists are: •    Best Documentary: “America’s Health Care: The Problem” by Dan Goulson ’09 •    Best Newscast: “April 24, 2009” by producer/writer/reporter Michelle Corless ’10; anchor Goulson; reporters Drew Borczak ’11, Marc Dahlquist ’11, Angela Hager ’10, Jill Howard ’10 and Mike Kintz ’12; and interviewer Ryan Piers ’11 •    Best Promo: “Mission Rock Promo-Overdrive” by Goulson At the state level, WONC staff were nominated for the 2009 Student Silver Dome Awards by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. Winners will be announced Oct. 1 at Illinois State University. Eight students received six nominations in these five categories: •    Best Radio Newscast: “9:55 Newscast” by Corless, credits include Corless, Dahlquist, Kintz and Hager; and “1:55 Newscast” by Corless, credits include Corless, Dahlquist and Hager •    Best Radio News Story: “Peace Officer Memorial” by Corless •    Best Radio Sports Story: “Raridon Family and Basketball” by Piers •    Best Station Website: Steven Oliveri ’11, credits include Oliveri and Joe Kain ’10 •    Best Use of Interactive Media: Oliveri, credits Oliveri and Samantha Grimson ’90
