Students in the Uncommon Life Movement (UCLM) are adopting a Burmese refugee family of five and working with World Relief to furnish the family’s first apartment. Before the family arrives Jan. 28, UCLM invites the campus community to help stock the apartment by donating household items or cash.
“We know the family includes two parents, two teen boys and a baby girl,” says Whitney Roberts, assistant director of ministry and service. “As the College did when it welcomed a refugee family from Iraq two years ago, we plan to have an ongoing relationship with the family as a ‘friendship partner,’ helping them acclimate to America in any way we can. Anyone in the campus community is welcome to join us.”
A complete list of needed items is detailed on a poster in the White Activities Center (WAC), where a large donation box is also located. Cash gifts can be given at the WAC front desk. Following is a sampling of items UCLM is collecting:
- Bathroom: towels, soap, shampoo, lotion, Kleenex, toothpaste and toothbrushes
- Cleaning: detergent, cleaning spray for bathroom and counters, mop and bucket
- Miscellaneous: pad of paper, pens, pencils, stamps, light bulbs, hangers, calendar, aluminum foil and plastic wrap, and more
