Steve Macek, associate professor of speech communication, was a respondent on a panel, along with Judy Brodhead, associate professor of English, at the 95th Annual Convention of the National Communication Association in Chicago on Nov. 13. At the same convention, he presented two papers—one about “Taft-Hartley and the Chicago Media” and the other about the history of the Chicago Typographical Union (Local 16). In addition, he presented a paper, titled “Gritty Urban Realism as Ideology: The Wire and the Televisual Representation of the ‘Inner City,’” on the TV series “The Wire” at the Nov. 6 annual meeting of the American Studies Association in Washington, D.C. And, on Oct. 12, he was one of two panelists at the Open University of the Left forum on “Privatizing the Airwaves” at the Lincoln Park Public Library in Chicago. A video of the presentation is online.
