Pat Shanower is scheduled to talk with local radio host Scott Mackay at about 7:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9. on WERV-FM 95.9 (The River) about the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that claimed the life of her son, Cmdr. Dan Shanower.
Navy Cmdr. Dan Shanower was in his Pentagon office the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, and died in the attack on Washington, D.C. Naperville's 9/11 memorial is named in his honor.
Scott Mackay's morning show on The River is produced by North Central alumnus Matt Freeman '06. Pat Shanower is the wife of North Central professor of theatre emeritus Donald "Doc" Shanower, and the College's home of women's softball, Shanower Family Field, is named in their honor.
Freeman says Pat Shanower also will talk about a local remembrance ceremony on Sunday. The Naperville Exchange Club is sponsoring a remembrance at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cmdr. Shanower Memorial, behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., along the Riverwalk. U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Richard Porterfield will be the keynote speaker.
North Central College will host a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. At 5 p.m. representatives from numerous Naperville-area Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and other spiritual and philosophic traditions will present readings, music and a time for meditation and reflection. The event will culminate with a short procession at 6 p.m. to the Naperville Riverwalk.
