New students collect food, restock local pantry

As part of Welcome Week activities, many new students volunteered their time and energy to go “Into the Streets” Saturday morning Sept. 10. Some 50 new students (photo) joined a canned food drive, coordinated by North Central College’s orientation staff and Office of Ministry and Service.

This year’s effort was focused on one project—collecting nonperishable food to donate to Loaves & Fishes food pantry in Naperville. Orientation staff members had notified homes around the College’s campus in advance about Saturday’s drive. After less than two hours into the streets, students had collected more than 800 lbs. of nonperishable food, says Whitney Roberts, assistant director of ministry and service.

“When we took the donation to Loaves & Fishes, they were incredibly impressed with the work the students did,” Whitney says. “They told us their commodities intake has been down 50 percent, so donations like this were incredibly important for them to continue providing the services they do to the community.”
