After being picked to finish sixth by the CCIW head coaches, the men’s basketball team has been declared CCIW Co-Champions for the 2010-2011 season. The Cardinals, who finished the regular season 15-10 overall, went 11-3 against CCIW opposition to match the mark posted by Augustana College (22-3). The sixth-ranked Vikings lost, 70-68, at Illinois Wesleyan University on Feb. 22 to tie with North Central for first place in the CCIW standings and give the Cardinals a share of their first conference title since the 1989-90 campaign.
By virtue of its 6-1 record in its final seven games of the season, North Central wins the tiebreaker over the Vikings and earns the right to host the CCIW Tournament this weekend, Feb. 25-26. The Cardinals take on Illinois Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of the tournament receives the CCIW’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship.
