Ever wonder what the terms fair trade, free trade and alternative trade really mean and how they differ, if at all? The documentary film “A Culture of Coffee” will help explain and be shown at 4 p.m. Monday, March 8, at the SIFE Alternative Trade Store, 100 E. Jefferson Ave. Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is hosting the event.
Matt Krystal, assistant professor of anthropology, will introduce the film, free Conscious Bean coffee will be served, and SIFE students who have traveled to Guatemala will discuss their experiences and answer questions.
The short film features indigenous Mayan farmers in Guatemala who talk about their struggle to achieve economic independence while producing high quality coffee on their own terms. This event is part of SIFE’s Removing Obstacles project, an effort to assist small producers of coffee, textiles and ceramics in bringing their products to market and helping them achieve economic independence.
After viewing the film, produced by Chris Mitchell, viewers will be asked to complete a survey to give feedback to SIFE students and the producer on ways to use the film in classrooms and other institutions. Those to who attend and complete the survey will receive a free ready-to-brew sample of Conscious Bean coffee.
