Leader in women’s athletics is recognized

Print Email Share

Upon arriving at North Central College in 1970, Bev Thornburg took over the responsibilities of head tennis coach and instructor of physical education. At the time, these were the only athletic opportunities for women on campus and she wasted no time in changing this. In a span from 1971 to 1975, Thornburg pioneered the way for women's volleyball, basketball and softball while coaching all three sports at the same time.

“I saw a need for more to happen. It took courage and persistence, but it was what needed to be done,” Thornburg said during the luncheon in her honor on Jan. 31.

Thornburg was recognized for her contributions to women’s athletics at North Central College and was named the 2012 recipient of the Cleo Tanner Award during the College’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
