The Union is back and has joined forces with the Black Student Association and Residence Life to host the Poetry Slam Friday, Jan. 21, as part of Martin Luther King Week. The featured poet is New Yorker Carlos Andres Gomez, as well as students and other area poets. The evening is free to students, $5 to the public, and starts at 7 p.m. at 129 W. Benton Ave.

Gomez, a former social worker and public school teacher in New York and Philadelphia, has traveled the world to perform, in addition to his film and TV work, starring in Spike Lee’s hit film “Inside Man” and on HBO’s “Russel Simmons presents DEF POETRY.” He has also claimed victory at the 2006 Toronto International Poetry Slam, won the 2009 Artist of the Year Award at the Promoting Outstanding Writers Awards, and has been a two-time finalist in the National Poetry Slam.
