Football accolades keep rolling in

For the first time since began selecting All-Region teams in 2005, the Cardinals received one of the North Region Player of the Year Awards. Linebacker Matt Wenger ’11 was voted the region’s Defensive Player of the Year. University of Mount Union (Ohio) wide receiver Cecil Shorts was selected as the North Region Offensive Player of the Year.

In addition, six Cardinal football players have been honored with selections to the 2010 NCAA Division III All-North Region Teams by North Central had a total of three First Team All-Region selections with offensive lineman Kyle Antos ’11 and defensive end Valente Garza ’11 joining Wenger on the list of the region’s top 26 players. Return specialist Joe Antonacci ’12 and safety Josh McLeod ’12 made the Second Team, while defensive end Willie Hayes ’12 was selected to the Third Team.

For the All-Star Game on Dec. 18, North Central will be represented by two football players and one coach at the 2010 Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) in Toluca, Mexico. Wide receiver Steve Hlavac ’11 and punter Shaun Wild ’11 will participate for Team Stars & Stripes in the game and assistant coach Brad Spencer ’04 will coach the team’s wide receivers. The team’s roster currently consists of 44 players from 22 NCAA Division III institutions.
