Accounting students help with taxing times

Print Email Share
With the April 15 tax deadline quickly approaching, several North Central students volunteered Saturdays throughout February and April to help others with their tax returns. Sixteen accounting majors became certified tax preparers and participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, providing free income tax assistance for low income families and individuals earning less than $49,000. Along with students from other colleges, some 148 tax returns were completed for people from 24 countries, helping them file $210,989 in federal and state tax refunds, a 20 percent increase from last year. Allison Hayes, assistant professor of accounting, helped oversee North Central’s effort.
