Paul Roots ‘07, a civil engineering student at the University of Illinois-Chicago, was named a Udall Scholar for his commitment to the environment, leadership potential and academic achievement. In April, the Udall Foundation selected 80 students from 61 colleges and universities as 2011 Udall Scholars, awarding scholarships up to $5,000. Roots majored in music and jazz studies at North Central and after graduation, joined the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps in 2008. He helped people in the Mississippi River community of Oakville, Iowa, recover from a devastating flood. Inspired by the experience, Roots enrolled in UIC’s civil engineering program and works as an undergraduate research assistant in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering lab. He serves as secretary of UIC’s Engineers Without Borders student chapter and last summer completed an internship at Waste Management. Roots is pursuing a career in environmental engineering. “A career that enables me to help both people and the earth will bring me great satisfaction,” he said. As for his music: “I play drums in the band Stephen Paul Smoker,” he said.
