Leong Tan was honored by the San Francisco Medical Society as a 50-year member at the annual dinner in January 2013. He was recognized for his commitment to provide high-quality health care for the underserved and has worked to improve health care delivery within the Chinese-American community. A retired urologist, Tan has mentored University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) urology residents, volunteered as a consultant to the North East Medical Services (NEMS) and cofounded a foundation to support impoverished students in China.
He received the 1991 UCSF William Smart Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and was honored as Volunteer of the Year by NEMS in 1990. Tan graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School in 1958. He and his wife Margaret will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary and have two sons and four grandchildren. They have lived in San Francisco since 1960.
