Beth Thomas ’63 Zimmermann was honored with an Outstanding Alumni Award for her distinguished nursing career and service to North Central College as a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees and alumni board.
“As a student, I grew to love NCC and appreciate this family,” said Zimmermann, mentioning the impact of people like the Reverend George St. Angelo ’43. “The professors and staff were dedicated to the profession of teaching and learning.”
At the Homecoming awards ceremony, she shared favorite memories of meeting her husband-to-be on the steps of Old Main, attending swim meets and needing permission to wear slacks to class after a blizzard.
A retired clinical nurse specialist for pediatric surgery at the worldrenowned University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, Zimmermann coordinated nursing care for children and teens experiencing minimally invasive surgery. After receiving a degree in elementary education from North Central College, Zimmermann completed a bachelor of science degree at Eastern Michigan University and her master’s degree in nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has worked with the high-risk infant and family program at the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital and as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Wyler Children’s Hospital. A member of the American Pediatric Surgery Nurses Association, Zimmermann served as president-elect with the Association’s board of directors and as treasurer and finance chairman.
From 2002 to 2004, Zimmermann was president of North Central’s alumni board of directors and she continues to travel frequently with seven classmates from the Class of 1963.
