Becky Anderson ’82 Wilkins, a co-owner of Anderson’s Books, had the honor of delivering books to the White House Library for the family of President Barack Obama, a tradition of the American Booksellers Association (ABA) that dates back to the administration of President Herbert Hoover. “It’s a rare occasion that the books are delivered in person,” she says. “It was a very relaxed situation and the President is very into books. He told that us he can’t just walk into a book store and browse anymore.”
As current president of the ABA, Anderson traveled to Australia and New Zealand in July as a keynote speaker at several events sponsored by booksellers in those countries. “It was amazing how much we had in common and how much we could share in terms of our best practices,” she says.
And at the recent Book Expo of America in New York City, Anderson’s Books was named Publishers Weekly 2011 Bookstore of the Year, one of the highest accolades a bookstore can receive. Anderson’s Books now includes Anderson’s Bookshops in Naperville and Downers Grove, IL; ABC Book Fairs, a school book fair company in Aurora, IL; and Two-Doors East gift shop in Naperville. In conjunction with Anderson’s Bookshops, North Central is co-hosting several well-known authors as part of a Sesquicentennial author series.
