May 21, 2012—Veronica Blue of Utica received two academic awards during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Blue was recognized with the College’s 2012 Outstanding Major in Elementary Education and 2012 Outstanding Student in the Human Thought and Behavior Division awards.
Blue is a senior majoring in elementary education with minors in reading and Chinese. She is the daughter of Fred and Monica Blue and a graduate of Ottawa Township High School.
After graduating from North Central in June, Blue plans to pursue a career as an elementary school or reading teacher in a rural community or small town. She is currently working as assistant summer camp director at Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center in Oregon, Ill.
As a student, she earned dean’s list honors and received a Richter Research Grant that she used to complete her study, “Excellence in Early Literacy: A Case Study of the Implementation of Scotland’s ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ in Primary Literacy Instruction.” She presented her research in March at the 2012 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.
She was selected to participate in North Central’s College Scholars Honors Program; traveled to Bogota, Colombia on a spring break community service trip; served as president of the student-run Chinese Club; and worked as a writing tutor to other students through the College’s EDGE study group. She was a member of Green Scene, a student group involved with environmental sustainability issues and activities.
