Major awards were announced today for two people who were awarded honorary degrees from North Central College and who delivered Commencement addresses at the College.

Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich H’00 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary, and Poetry magazine editor Christian Wiman H’11 was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Schmich, the 2000 Commencement speaker and Doctor of Humane Letters recipient, delivered her first-ever graduation address to the Cardinal graduating class 12 years ago. She had turned down numerous other speaking invitations before accepting the offer from North Central, having written a famous 1997 column that parodied a graduation address.

Wiman delivered his first-ever graduation speech to North Central’s class of 2011. In addition to being editor of Poetry magazine, he was authored several best-selling compilations of his poetry and has taught or lectured at Northwestern University, Lynchburg College, the Prague School of Economics, Stanford University and Yale Divinity School.
