The award-winning ensemble Sol y Canto will perform its trademark Latin-flavored songs filled with poetry and energy Oct. 1 at North Central College.

When group founders Rosi and Brian Amador first met in 1984, no one could predict the music project of their dreams would blossom out of their relationship. Rosi, a Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and bongo player, along with her husband Brian, a New Mexican guitarist and composer, have spent more than two decades together composing and arranging music that inspires audiences of all kinds and ages. They lead the three-time Boston Music Award-winning Sol y Canto, which also features virtuoso musicians from Uruguay, Peru, Panama and Argentina on piano, winds, brass and percussion.

The performance will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, in North Central's Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $35, $30 and $25; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit

Sol y Canto's combination of poetry, commitment to social change and "sabor"-or the tastiness of music-captures and draws listeners in, making them want to get up and dance. Their music is accessible for Spanish and non-Spanish speakers alike. Brian was the first Latino ever to be commissioned by Boston's preeminent Celebrity Series to compose a Latin orchestral suite, "Prisma de amores." The magazine People en Español selected the couple for its 2007 Stars of the Year issue, which highlighted four inspiring Hispanics who have used their passion, conviction, creativity and self-discovery to achieve success.

In 2008, Sol y Canto released "Cada Día un Regalo" (Each Day a Gift), a culmination of both original compositions and hand-picked selections from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chile and Cuba. The CD, released by MusicAmador Productions, embodies the sextet's visions about love and justice.

This performance is one of many ongoing programs at North Central College to enrich and broaden the cultural and academic outlook for the College and community. North Central offers a variety of venues accommodating a rich range of local and world-class events, performances and space needs for the public.
