Kristine Servais, North Central College associate professor of education and coordinator of master of arts program in education, has co-authored her second book, “The Courage to Grow: Leading with Intentionality.”
Published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers in March 2012 with co-author Kellie Sanders, “The Courage to Grow” shows educational leaders how to design and carry out a leadership professional development plan. A guide and a training manual, her book is for the teacher leader, beginning principal, practicing principal, assistant principal, department chair, district office administrator, aspiring leadership candidate and professor of principal preparation. It follows her earlier book with Sanders—a principal at Walker’s Grove Elementary School in Plainfield, Ill.—which is titled “The Courage to Lead: Choosing the Road Less Traveled.”
Douglas Reeves, chair of The Leadership and Learning Center, gives a review of the book: “Packed with practical tools and self-assessments, this book will encourage new leaders and challenge veteran leaders to improve their strategies. Above all, the book challenges the reader to make specific personal commitments. It is not possible to read this volume passively—you will use it as a daily manual for personal development.”
Servais has served as a middle school and elementary teacher, middle school assistant principal and principal, and is director of field experiences for pre-service teachers at North Central College. She has been a member of the College’s faculty since 2002. She earned her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and her Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University.
