“We have a number of offerings this year to keep children active and engaged this summer with North Central College,” says Natalie Vivacqua, summer camps program director. “We have more than 40 sessions of athletic, academic and fine arts camps available for ages 5 and up.”

Course fees vary, and some camps include overnight accommodations. New camps and workshops for summer 2012 include courses in ministry and cartooning. Popular courses such as Computer Animation with Flash and Introduction to Game Programming encourage creativity and develop skills.

The College’s award-winning student-run radio station WONC-FM 89.1 offers a workshop that allows middle school and high school students to broadcast live on the air. Participants also learn how a radio station operates and visit professional stations in the Chicago area.

Two separate weeklong musical theatre workshops for junior high and high school students provide fast-paced, upbeat classes and instruction in acting, singing and dancing taught by seasoned educators and industry professionals.

Children and adults can participate in three community musicals this summer. “The Wizard of Oz” for actors ages 8 and up will be presented June 29-30, July 1 and July 6-8. “Princess Ida,” for ages 17 and up, will be performed July 10-15. Another musical for ages 14 and up will be presented July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5. Vocal auditions for all shows will be held May 5, and dance auditions will be held May 4. Callbacks are May 6.

Sports camps include boys basketball, grades three to 10; girls basketball, ages 7-14; baseball, ages 5 to 16; tennis, grades two to 12; and girls volleyball, grades four to 9. Children involved in athletic camps will focus on developing and improving fundamental skills through scrimmages and competitions and learn the importance of conditioning and mental preparation. All sports camps—which also include soccer, cross country and track and field—are coached by North Central College varsity coaches and assistants and assisted by varsity athletes.

This summer the College hosts the 24th annual Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp July 22-27. The camp offers aspiring jazz vocalists an intensified, one-week course of study and skills development conducted by a faculty of professional performing and recording artists. Daily activities include workshops in jazz improvisation, performance styles and techniques and solo performance preparation as well as artist master classes, vocal jazz history and music theory. The camp features nightly faculty artist concerts, informal student jam sessions and a final concert featuring each participant performing with the staff rhythm section. This year’s camp faculty includes vocalists Janice Borla, Jay Clayton and Suzanne Pittson. The camp is open to all participants age 14s through adult. The deadline for enrollment is June 1.
