Béla Fleck and the Flecktones perform its eclectic repertoire March 3 in North Central College’s acoustically stunning Wentz Concert Hall.

Groundbreaking banjoist, composer and bandleader Béla Fleck has reconvened the extraordinary initial lineup of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. From classical, jazz, bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances, the Flecktones create a sound all their own that is utterly indescribable.

The Béla Fleck & The Flecktones performance begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $80 and $70; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

Fleck first united the group, consisting of bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Roy Wooten and pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy, in 1988. Though the original intention was a single performance on PBS’ “Lonesome Pine Special,” the four musicians couldn’t help but notice there was a strong kinship among them—a bond forged in a mutual passion for creativity and artistic advancement.

That musical chemistry led to three albums and a tour schedule of about 150 shows a year. With a lineup change, numerous solo projects and five Grammys under their belts, the Flecktones took a brief hiatus in 2008 in an attempt to renovate their musical spirit.

The time apart allowed for fresh, innovative ideas to sprout, paving the way for a reunion of the original lineup. The 2011 release “Rocket Science” marks the first recording by the fab four in nearly two decades with some of the most forward-thinking music of their long, storied career.

“There’s a special thing that happens when the four of us get together and play,” Levy says. “We all have the same attitude of trying to do things that we haven’t done before and, coincidentally, no one else has either.”
